Sometimes when a permanent tooth is slow to grow in, or has failed to come in all together, it needs some extra assistance. An exposure means that a permanent tooth is stuck under the gums and needs to be bonded and exposed in order for the orthodontist to bring the tooth down into its proper position. For an exposure, you would generally see an oral surgeon (after starting braces) and they would perform a simple expose and bond procedure. You would then visit your orthodontist to attach the tooth to your braces to begin bringing it down into place. It is important to have a permanent tooth that is stubborn to grow in exposed and brought into proper position because if you do not, the roots of surrounding teeth could absorb. Thus, you are compromising the health of your teeth. #braces #damon #clear #salem
